20TH ANNIVERSARY

BUDAPEST-BAMAKO 2025

THE ENDURING SPIRIT OF ADVENTURE.

In 2005 a group of intrepid adventurers set out from Budapest to show the world that you don’t fancy cars and outrageous budgets to cover the route of the Dakar Rally. The press first billed it as the “Dakar Of The Poor”, then a few years later it became the world’s largest amateur rally. In January 2025 join us to remember, relive and preserve the spirit of the original Budapest-Bamako. We’re putting on a rally that is different from any other Budapest-Bamako we’ve ever produced: little nostalgic, community centric, challenging.

Desperate moment between Noadhibou and B2 Beach. Both locations will be on the route of the 2025 Anniversary Special.

HOW IS 2025 DIFFERENT FROM OTHER YEARS?

We will remember the original, first Budapest-Bamako in 2025. Racing category teams will follow a race format just like in 2005. (More details on this later on this page).  There will not be 4×4 touring, just touring category. The distance will be shorter by about 1500kms. There will be more time to enjoy the sights and each other’s company. We will also honor those heroes who attended the 2005 event by giving them guest briefing appearances and other special considerations. The route will be different as well.

WHAT WILL BE THE ROUTE?

We will try to stick to the original 2005 route as much as possible in Europe and Morocco. In Mauritania the rally will return to Nouadhibou and B2 Beach with an epic beach road drive. Bamako is still off limits. So after 3 days in Senegal we will finish the race in the capital of The Gambia, Banjul. Teams can add a few extra days or weeks on the smiling coast of Africa and add a beach vacation.

CAN ANYONE ENTER?

Yes. The motto is the same. Anyone. By Anything. By Any Means. However we will reserve the first two weeks for veterans of the 2005 rally to register. On June 7th we will open general registrations.

WILL THERE BE MEDICS & BRIEFINGS?

Yes and yes. There will be complete medical service in all the camps and there will be regular morning briefings, just like on all of our events.

CAN I SWAP MY 2026 ENTRY FOR 2025?

While that is not allowed you may certainly sell your 2026 entry to someone else and purchase a new entry for 2025. However we strongly recommend that you book your 2025 entry as soon as possible.

HOW WILL THE COMPETITIVE CATEGORY BE DIFFERENT?

In 2005 every racing team car had a GPS logger and we checked the loggers at the very end of the race in Bamako. We will apply a similar system in 2025. There will be no daily checkpoints or race sheets. You will get all the geo-challenges and check points in advance ahead of the race. Each team is required to spend 8 hours a night resting at the official nightly camp.  The team that visits the most checkpoints, completes the route in the shortest time, shortest distance and with the least amount of speeding violations will win. It is a complex task for two weeks. But that’s what will set the 2025 champion apart from the rest of the crowd.

VIP CONSIDERATION FOR 2005 PARTICIPANTS

If you were crazy enough to enter the 2005 Budapest-Bamako we need you here. We will provide special passes, numbers and a 200Euro per person administrative credit to everyone who was at the 2005 event. We will also give you guest morning briefing slots and want to hear your stories from the first Budapest-Bamako.
